How to cut cooling electricity in Saudi Arabia — a practical guide

Seven proven measures, ranked by payback, from the engineers who install them: Oxycom IDEC, chiller pre-cooling, make-up air, coil coatings, VRF, analytics and design.

Cooling is the biggest line on almost every electricity bill in the Kingdom. The good news: most buildings can cut it by a third or more without sacrificing comfort. Here is the order we recommend, based on payback in Saudi conditions.

1. Pre-cool your chillers and condensers (payback 1.5–2.5 years)

Air-cooled chillers and condensers lose capacity and burn electricity when entering air exceeds 45°C. A PreCooll adiabatic wet wall drops the entering air by 15–25°C, cutting chiller energy by 20–40% and peak demand by up to 30%. DAMAC EDGNEX measured 35%; PSAU 20%.

2. Replace DX with Oxycom IDEC where fresh air is needed (up to 90% less electricity)

Factories, warehouses, showrooms, halls, schools and kitchens need lots of fresh air — and pay a fortune to cool it with compressors. IDEC (Indirect Direct Evaporative Cooling) supplies 100% fresh, filtered, cool air for fan-and-pump electricity only. eXtra Al Worood cut its cooling bill by 66%.

3. Fix kitchen make-up air (fast payback for restaurants)

Every m³ your hoods exhaust must come back in. A DX fresh-air unit is the most expensive way to cool that air; an IntrCooll make-up air unit is a fraction of the capital and running cost.

4. Restore your coils (Enercoat coatings, up to 20%)

Dust, heat and corrosion degrade every coil in the Kingdom. A thermal coil coating restores performance, protects against corrosion and extends equipment life, with measured before/after savings.

5. Choose VRF for new or replaced comfort cooling

VRF modulates to real demand zone by zone and avoids the on/off cycling of ducted splits; for villas, compounds, offices and hotels it is usually the most efficient refrigerant-based choice.

6. Find the hidden waste with analytics (FDD)

Stuck valves, drifting sensors, simultaneous heating and cooling and equipment running out of schedule waste 10–20% in most large buildings without anyone noticing. Fault detection and diagnostics on your BMS data ranks what to fix first.
